What is the Goal?

Many of the people that I sponsor develop a certain antipathy when they hear this question because it usually means that one will have to think and act. There are a few requirements to answering this question.

1. Determine what it is that you want or need (establish the goal).
2. Identify what actions will lead you to achieving the goal.
3. Put the plan of action into practice.
4. Evaluate the progress and change the action if necessary.

Of course, I can make anything more difficult then it actually is. The Eagles wrote a song about this particular skill. The lyrics are, "...Nothing wrong as far as I can see. We make it harder than it has to be, and I can't tell you why..."

This process is really simple, although it does take some practice. Here is how I used the process this past weekend.

I have heart disease and must exercise daily. This requires some discipline. I think discipline is a bad word. Computer games can take up most of my free time (plus some not-so-free time if I'm not careful). However, I like computer games and it doesn't take any discipline for me to play them daily. So!

What is the goal? To exercise daily.
How can I achieve the goal? Make exercising enjoyable. I have an Exercycle, but I easily get bored with riding it. How could I exercise mindlessly? I could figure out how to play computer games while exercising.
My plan is how to modify the Exercycle so that I can do both things at once. I talk my hubby into lowering the handle bars of the bike. Then I have him make a shelf that attaches to the handle bars. The shelf is slanted to a comfortable angle for working the laptop, has a little lip in front to keep the laptop from sliding off and is secured with some laundry hooks and an old shoelace.
Does this plan of action help me achieve the goal? So far, so good. I've exercised for longer than the 30 minutes recommended by my doctor for the past 3 days. I'll keep you posted.

Have a good and sober day.

  1. Nice! Very creative way to achieve the goal of exercising while doing something you enjoy. Now if I could only eat a gallon of ice cream while rollerblading...
