Auction

Guess what?? I was at an auction last weekend (mostly because I wanted to see the inside of the house) and was looking at some of the things that were laid out on the tables. I opened this carved box and discovered a bunch of recovery medallions. Well, being a Nancy Drew kind of person, I surmised that there was probably a Big Book, the basic text of Alcoholics Anonymous, to go along with the tokens.

Snooping around a tad more thoroughly, sure enough, I found it buried amongst a bunch of novels. A second edition Big Book in excellent condition just hiding in a beat up cardboard box, waiting for me to find it. (Seems to me that the auctioneers should have recognized a book of such value but there you go.) The original jacket was intact, though it has two very small tears. The pages are unmarked and there is no writing in any of the margins.

Naturally, the boxes of books were some of the last things to go but I didn't mind waiting around. Of course I bought some other stuff, too: a bunch of wall paper to donate to a half way house for women in recovery, some Russian nesting dolls (my grand kid loves those), an exercise bench, etc. There were some potential Christmas gifts for family members that went for a lot more than any reasonable person would pay. Who knew that stupid rich people hung out at auctions?

Anyway, they eventually got around to what I was interested in. I had one fierce competitor that wanted the novels, but he finally stopped bidding. I bought the box for $17.50, reached in and pulled out the Big Book and handed the rest to the guy who wanted the novels. Both of us were delighted.

The old HP is really slick. A second edition Big Book for under $20. I am so blessed; by an old HP with a sense of humor, a loving and giving Spirit. And to think, without you and the ETA program, I'd have gone on believing He didn't love me. Thank you all for showing me the truth of a Higher Power who loves me enough to surprise me with little signs of His love whenever I invite Him along to share my day. Thank you all for teaching me how to recognize these things, too. And no, you can't borrow my second edition Big Book. This is a selfish program.

Have a good and sober day.

  2. If you are very good I might let you touch it. In order to read it, however, you'll need cash.

  3. I love it. Glad that you got that book. I think that the old medallions are cool too.
