This song reminds me of when the euphoria of early sobriety wears off. The newcomer has few spiritual tools to use and tends to get depressed. In the recovery program ETA, this meeting topic circulates frequently. The group laughs, because we all remember being in this same place. (In my experience, this is a real turning point: a newcomer will either start applying what he has been taught, or he will drink.) When they then complain to their sponsor, the conversation usually goes something like this. My changes are in caps.
Bad Day by Daniel Powter
Where is the moment when we need it the most
You kick up the leaves and the magic is lost
YOU tell me your PINK CLOUD'S faded to grey
YOU tell me your passion's gone away
And YOU don't need TO GRUMBLE on
You ROMANCE THE DRINK just to hit a new low
You're faking a smile with the PEOPLE YOU KNOW
You tell me your life's been way off line
You're falling to pieces every time
And YOU don't need no GRUMBLE on
Cause you had a bad day
You KEEP YOURSELF down
SO YOU'RE SINGING sad SONGS just to turn it around?
You say you don't know
I tell YOU TO TRY
WHY DON'T YOU SUMMON A smile and THEN go for a ride
You had a bad day
The camera don't lie
You're coming back down and you really don't mind
You had a bad day
You had a bad day
Well YOU'VE HAD YOUR PINK CLOUD holiday
TRY LEARNING TO laugh at what you say
And YOU don't need TO GRUMBLE on
Cause you had a bad day
You KEEP YOURSELF down
SO YOU'RE SINGING sad SONGS just to turn it around?
You say you don't know
I tell YOU TO TRY
WHY DON'T YOU SUMMON A smile and THEN go for a ride
You had a bad day
The camera don't lie
You're coming back down and you really don't mind
You had a bad day
You had a bad day
Sometimes YOUR THINKING goes on the blink and the whole thing it turns out Wrong
You might not make it back SO YOU JUST BETTER STAY
I KNOW you could be well oh that
Strong
AND I'm not wrong
So where is the passion when you need it the most
Oh you and I
WE'LL kick up the leaves the magic's NOT LOST
Cause you had a bad day
YOU'RE GULPING one down
YOU'RE CLOSING YOU EYES TO KEEP FROM TURNING it around?
You say you don't know
I tell YOU TO TRY
WHY DON'T YOU SUMMON A smile and THEN go for a ride
You had a bad day
YOU DID WHAT YOU LIKE
AND HOW DOES THAT FEEL
One more time
You had a bad day
NOW IT'S A REALLY a bad day
Have a good and sober day.

I'm glad that when I have a bad day, I can get to the root of what has caused it--one of my character defects, generally fear, surfacing. Just having awareness of this helps me to get through the tough moments. Thanks for sharing the song.
ReplyDeleteGood one!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite re-writes are 'Livin' on a prayer', 'Wait for me' and 'grease'. Would be interested in your opinion of them.
