In the back of the book, "Alcoholics Anonymous", there is an appendix titled, "Spiritual Experience". The appendix concludes with this quote by Herbert Spencer:
"There is a principle which is a bar against all information, which is proof against all arguments and which cannot fail to keep a man in everlasting ignorance- that principle is contempt prior to investigation."
As a recovering alcoholic and drug addict, I belong to the program ETA. I read literature from many recovery programs. Some of the people in recovery programs have strong opinions about which literature is appropriate for the members of that particular program. ETA is more flexible - anything we read can be considered recovery literature. Therefore, should you be trying to help a newcomer (or yourself) understand the concept of 'contempt prior to investigation', I highly recommend this piece of widely acclaimed, and very well known, literature: "Green Eggs and Ham" by Dr. Suess.
Have a good and sober day.

One of my favorite books to tell others about is a children's book that reminds me not to "drive" in my life. http://emspinkcloud.blogspot.com/2010/05/book-for-children-or-for-alcoholics.html
ReplyDeleteLOL! I like a variety of literature, as well. The 'not conference approved' nazis are missing out.
ReplyDeleteI like all kinds of literature too. And read a lot. Green Eggs and Ham is a good one!
