Today's song is re-written as though an alcoholic is talking to alcoholism and/or the alcohol. It resembles the thoughts I used to have in active addiction. Clarifications are in parenthesis. They aren't part of the song, they are more like an explanation of what I'm singing about. My changes are in caps.
I Wonder Why by Curtis Stigers
Love (OF BOOZE) is a hunger
That burns in my soul
YET I never notice the pain
Love is an anchor
That won't let me go
I reach out to hold you
But you PUT me away
And you always convince me to stay
And I wonder why
We hold on (TO DRINKING) with tears in our eyes
And I wonder why
We have to break down (AND DRINK) to make things FEEL right
And I wonder why
I can't seem to tell you goodbye
Yeah, I wonder why
I'm no angel
With my selfish pride
But I love you more everyday
This love is an anger
That builds up inside
As the tears of frustration
Roll down my face
Why DID THE love have to turn out this way
And i wonder why
We hold on with tears in our eyes
And i wonder why
We have to break down (AND DRINK) to make things FEEL right
And i wonder why
I cant seem to tell you goodbye
Oh, i wonder why
I don't want to fight again tonight
About the little things (SO I HAVE AN EXCUSE TO DRINK) please baby
I just want to find my way
Back to love
And I'll meet you there, MAYBE
And i wonder why
We hold on with tears in our eyes
And i wonder why
We have to break down (AND DRINK) to make things FEEL right
And i wonder why
I cant seem to tell you goodbye
Oh, i wonder why
I wonder why...
Have a good and sober day.

'Love of booze is a hunger,' indeed. I'm glad I've had my fill!
ReplyDeleteI'm with you there. I pray every day that I don't drink or drug again; that I never think it's a viable option because it's a deadly option.
ReplyDeletePowerful stuff.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Syd. Both the substance and the message.
